We really do love the NHS

If you haven't seen this story yet, let me explain.

An editorial in an American business journal recently stated that the UK's National Health Service promoted an Orwellian regime where the old were left to die and, most perplexingly, a man like Stephen Hawking would be abandoned by the service because of his disabilities.

The result of this wasn't too hard to imagine. Apart from the glaring error that Professor Hawking was born in the UK and has lived here all his life, outrage has spread out from the British public and on no site more than Twitter, which seems to be becoming quite a platform for social unrest.

I think the thing that's surprised me about this whole thing is the scale of the outcry. Literally thousands of people have been Tweeting their stories with the #welovethenhs hashtag, showing their gratitude to the medical system here which treats anyone regardless of who they are. The NHS does come under a lot of fire, it seems to be constantly running out of money, or there aren't enough doctors, or whatever new crisis the media has dreamed up, but it's so nice to see so many people thanking and crediting the doctors, nurses and hospital staff who really do make this system the best in the world.

All it took was an attack from a 'friend' to realise how much we appreciate the NHS. And this little insignificant blogger is wading in with his voice too, saying he loves the NHS.

    Here Here Indeed!
Let the Americans complain about our health care system all they like, but ours means that people won't get turned away because they don't have money and that is how healing the sick should be.
I watched a programme a few months back with some Americans who didn't have healthcare and thus just avoiding treatment for some major things. This isn't right, the NHS is great.
