A Tribute to Michael Jackson

Well it seems that Michael Jackson has done his final show. For those who don't know he sadly passed away yesterday after having a cardiac arrest at his home in LA

At first I didn't believe it after reading initial rumours on Facebook and after a mishmash of news the BBC News 24 channel finally confirmed it at about midnight. It is very sad to hear he died so young and wasn't able to go out with a bang with his concerts at the O2 arena, one in which I was planning to attend.

It is also sad that the final years of his life were full of controversy and scandals instead of great music. However I would just like to take a moment to look back at the awesome music he created over the years.

To me he made up part of the 1990's and I have a memory going back to when I was young with someone asking me who my favourite pop star at the time was, I remember saying Michael Jackson and then promptly heading down the slide I was currently around. The thing was I don't remember listening to much of his music back then but it shows that he was an icon on the times.

For many years though I have enjoyed his music, they were always a popular choices at clubs and everyone got into them. At work as well me and my friend would regularly put Michael Jacksons greatest hits on and enjoy them. I have even spent entire afternoons listening to his music, including yesterday. His music videos revolutionised the way artists presented their music visually and has had an irreversible effect on music to this day.

He also seemed to affect the gaming world as well, weirdly producing an arcade game and Mega Drive game called Michael Jackson Moonwalker, which is actually pretty good. There have also been rumours that Michael Jackson worked on some music for Sonic 3 on the Mega Drive. For regular readers of Just a Day you know how much I like Sonic and thus I have a great respect for that.

I feel that perhaps Michael Jackson was the greatest performer of our time, with some great dance moves including the moonwalk and good songs to go with them.

When his death was announced I felt like we had lost the Elvis of our generation (he even was married to his daughter at one point) and whilst many will remember the controversy and weirdness, ultimately I feel he will and should be remembered for producing and performing some fantastic music which will be played for decades to come.
