This Weeks Playlist 3-7-09
Welcome to a new weekly feature where I give a quick discussion on the games I have been playing this week. I'll try and be in depth rather than just describing my week and please get involved.
Secret of Monkey Island (PC)
With Tales of Monkey Island coming next week I felt like playing through the old Monkey Island games. I haven't played the original two for quite a while so I had forgotten most of it. What surprised me about the first game is how short it was, I remember it being longer for some reason.
However it still holds up really well, the humour is still funny and hours seemed to fly by as I played through this game. My favourite bit is still the part where Guybrush first meets Elaine and gets the crazy dialogue choices, something every man feels at one point.

I had a lot of fun playing through the Secret of Monkey Island and has made me look forward to the upcoming remake. If you're unsure about getting the Tales of Monkey Island episodes it might be worth tracking down this game first or waiting for the remake to come out on PC and Xbox 360.
One thing I did learn from the game was to never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game ;-)
Monkey Island 2 (PC)
After playing through the first Monkey Island game I went on to fire up the second game. This one is even more hazy in my memory as I've only ever finished it once. I decided this time I would go for the harder setting and it doesn't seem that bad so far.
You can tell playing the two games together that the tone changed a lot in the second game. The graphics are a lot more colourful and the game seems more varied with more locations than the first game. The story is also darker and better paced, it does make the first once seem a little like a cliched pirate story (Secrets story is still awesome by the way).
The humour still works for this game which is almost 20 years old and as with the first game the gameplay holds up. Whilst I really enjoyed playing through the first game, this one hasn't sucked me in as much yet and thus I haven't got round to completing it. It is still a blast to play though.

Virtua Tennis 3 (Xbox 360)
As mentioned in the previous blog entry I've been sucked into the tennis mania, however unlike Andy Murray I have won Wimbledon (sorry that does sound harsh). For the first time in my Virtua Tennis history I got to the end of the World Tour mode and became number one in the world.
The World Tour mode in Virtua Tennis 3 involves having to play tournaments in order to improve your rank and train your created character to improve your stats. It is fairly repetitive but similar to other career modes in sports games.
It is a bit weird the final tournament as when I played it, I needed to beat Federer in order to gain the rank. This felt a bit "gamey" to me as it seemed like a final boss. I found it a great game to play in short bursts and has kept me entertained over the last week.
I've also had a few games in the arcade/tournament mode and still cannot beat Duke :-(
Well that's it for this week, sorry the games are a bit old, that's what happens when you have no money. Next week there should be some new games to discuss.
